Walking for Health: How Much Is Enough?

By Khaleel Almomen · 4 min read

🚶

Walking is one of the easiest ways to be more active. It needs no equipment, no gym and very little time to start.

What do guidelines recommend?

Major health organizations suggest at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week for adults, such as brisk walking. That is about 30 minutes on five days. Shorter walks count too.

Do you need 10,000 steps?

Not necessarily. The 10,000 target is popular, but studies suggest benefits start well below it, and many people do well in the 7,000 range. Use steps as motivation, not as a rule.

How to start

1. Begin small

Start with 10 minutes a day and add a few minutes each week.

2. Walk after meals

A short walk after eating is an easy habit to repeat.

3. Make it social

Walk with a friend or family member, or take calls while you walk.

4. Use your day

Park farther away, take the stairs and get off a stop early.

5. Pick your pace

A brisk walk is one where you can talk but could not sing.

6. Wear comfortable shoes

Good footwear helps prevent sore feet and blisters.

Staying safe

In hot weather, walk early or late and carry water. In the dark, wear light or reflective clothing. If you have not been active for a long time, or you have a health condition, speak to your doctor before increasing your activity.

Keep it going

Track your walks, set a realistic weekly goal and celebrate small wins. Consistency matters more than speed or distance.
