How to Build a Balanced Plate: A Simple Guide
By Khaleel Almomen · 4 min read
You do not need to count calories to eat well. A balanced plate is a simple picture you can use at every meal, at home or in a restaurant.
The basic plate
- Half: vegetables and fruit, in a mix of colors. Vegetables should take the larger share.
- A quarter: whole grains such as brown rice, oats, quinoa or whole-wheat bread.
- A quarter: protein such as fish, eggs, poultry, beans, lentils or tofu.
- A little healthy fat: olive oil, nuts or seeds.
- To drink: mostly water, with unsweetened tea or coffee if you like.
Why it works
Vegetables and fruit give you fiber and a wide range of nutrients. Whole grains release energy more steadily than refined ones. Protein helps you feel full. A little fat makes meals satisfying and helps your body absorb some vitamins.
Easy swaps
White to whole
Swap white rice, bread or pasta for whole-grain versions a few times a week.
Fried to baked
Try grilling, baking or air-frying instead of deep frying.
Sweet drinks to water
Replace one sweet drink a day with water or sparkling water.
Processed to simple
Choose foods with short ingredient lists you recognize.
Common mistakes
- Skipping vegetables at lunch and dinner.
- Oversized portions of refined carbohydrates.
- Eating in front of a screen, which makes it harder to notice fullness.
Make it fit your life
Culture, budget and taste all matter. Use frozen vegetables, canned beans or pre-cooked grains if they save time. Needs differ for children, pregnancy, and medical conditions, so ask a doctor or dietitian for personal advice.
